المجاز/Al-Majāz/Allegory

المجاز Allegory literally is to go beyond. Rhetorically: is to go from the literal, original, non-allegorical meaning of a word to another non intrinsic meaning while having a connection (hint) with the original meaning which is the link (‘alaqah) between the original and metaphorical meaning. Majaz also has a qareena or clue that hints that meaning used is the allegorical. Qareena can be explicit from (lafzeeyya) or implicit (haaliyya). For example:

Alelegory has three elements:

  1. Link or connection that allows the non intrinsic menaing to be used instead of the non intrinsic menaing
  2. The link is either similarity or dissimilarity
  3. There should be a lexical clue in the proposition that indicates and specifies the link
