Affirming Praise with a Tone of Dispraise and Dispraise with a Tone of Praise تأكيد المدح بما يشبه الذم وتأكيد الذم بما يشبه المدح

Affirming praise using a tone of dispraise and dispraise using a tone of praise is a rhetorical technique used in the Arabic Language to grab attention or add effectiveness and can be achieved by one of the following methods:

A. Affirming dispraise using praise تأكيد الذم بما يشبه المدح

1.  Affirmed Dispraise: to affirm dispraise within a proposition then use the excluding particle أداة الاستثناء then follow with another proposition that contains a dispraise worthy attribute.

For example: لا خير فيهم إلا أنهم لا يكرمون ضيفهم there is no good in them except that they don’t welcome their guest. Here the speaker negated a praise worthy quality then used the excluding particle giving the impression that he may mention a praise worthy quality, but he mentions another dispraise worthy quality affirming the dispraise using praise.

2. Negated Dispraise: to exclude dispraise from a proposition that contains a negated praise worthy attribute.

For example: لا خير في المنزل إلا أنه ضيق الغرف there is no goodness in this house except that the rooms are small. Here the speaker negates a praise or good quality then uses the excluding particle giving the impression that what will follow is praise but he mentions another negative quality negating dispraise from another proposition that is also a dispraise.
